A road-going Golf GTI TCR is coming

Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf GTI TCR Concept at this year’s GTI Treffen, which is currently taking place in Wörthersee, Austria.

Inspired by the similarly-named TCR racing car, this street-legal version is distinguished by its redesigned front bumper, 18” ‘Belvedere’ forged alloy wheels, body-side graphics and aggressive rear diffuser. Microfibre and fabric upholstery meanwhile helps to create a unique interior ambience.

The changes aren’t just cosmetic, though.

Thanks to some modifications, the 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers 286 bhp (213 kW / 290 PS) with 370 Nm (272 lb/ft) of peak torque. That increased output is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and a locking differential.

Furthermore, there are two extra radiators to aid cooling, plus upgraded brakes are fitted.

An optional performance package has also been developed. As well as adding 19” wheels, a stiffer suspension set-up and the Dynamic Chassis Control system, this raises the top speed from an electronically-limited 155 mph (250 km/h) to an unrestricted 164 mph (264 km/h).

The Golf GTI TCR Concept looks set to become a showroom model. Indeed, production is tentatively scheduled to begin towards the end of 2018.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.
