Spanish Suzuki plant closing

It has been a difficult week for Suzuki. First of all, the company’s United States subsidiary filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, before declaring that sales of Suzuki cars would cease in America.

Then, more bad news followed as Suzuki Motor España announced that all motorcycle production at the Gijón, Asturias factory is to terminate by the end of the first quarter 2013. Citing poor economic conditions in Europe as the cause, the move follows a period of accumulated losses by the operation.

For the UK, three models are affected: the GZ125 mini-cruiser and the Burgman 125 and Burgman 250 scooters. The plant also produces a number of other small-capacity bikes for other markets.

Suzuki isn’t saying yet which facilities might take over the lost manufacturing capacity, but the firm has indicated that other motorcycles currently built in Asia could be offered in Europe to fill any gaps in the range.
