Beetle GSR coming to the UK
Following its unveiling at February’s Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen has confirmed that 100 examples of the limited edition Beetle GSR are going to be offered to UK customers.
Inspired by the Beetle 1303S Gelb Schwarzer Renner (Yellow Black Racer) of forty years ago, the specification includes side stripes, 19” ‘Tornado’ alloy wheels, R Line bumpers and a prominent rear spoiler.
The performance theme continues in the cabin, where fabric-covered R Line seats, a sports steering wheel, an R Line dash pad and special floor mats all feature. Completing the package is a plaque showing the car’s build number.
Originally, only the yellow and black colour scheme shown in the images was going to be available. However, it seems that Volkswagen has reversed that decision because buyers wanting a more subtle look can now choose a platinum grey and black finish instead.
Power comes from a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine, which for Europe is rated at 207 bhp (154 kW / 210 PS) with 280 Nm (206 lb/ft) of torque. That’s sufficient for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 142 mph (228 km/h).
With a six-speed manual gearbox the GSR’s UK price is £24,900, while the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission costs an extra £1,500. Orders are being accepted now, but deliveries aren’t due to begin until September.
Like the original 1303S version, total production of the 2014 Beetle GSR will be limited to 3,500 units, with the majority destined for the United States.
