Lotus Motorcycles C-01 unveiled
The first thing to know about the unusual Lotus C-01 motorcycle is that Group Lotus has had no involvement in its development. Rather, the Lotus name has been licensed to German firm Kodewa which is running the project in collaboration with Holzer Group.
Built around a titanium, carbon fibre and aerospace-grade steel frame, the bike features an upside-down front fork and a surprisingly retro dual-strut rear suspension set-up. Power comes from a 1,195 cc KTM V-twin engine producing around 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS).
The C-01’s profile is definitely long and low. Indeed, the 1,645 mm (64.8”) wheelbase is just 45 mm (1.8”) shorter than a Honda GL1800 Gold Wing’s. Günther Holzer, CEO of Holzer Group, has described the handling as “breath-taking”. He doesn’t elaborate whether that’s breath-taking in a good or bad sense…
A small bikini fairing, one-piece bodywork and a solo seat unit all further contribute to the distinctive look. To emphasise the branding link, the colour schemes shown so far have all been inspired by former Lotus Formula One liveries.
With a prototype now running, Kodewa is preparing for production. However, just 100 examples of the C-01 are going to be created and a price has yet to be disclosed.
