Honda Civic Type R Concept revealed

Honda reckons its new Civic Type R will be ‘a racing car for the road’. That would seem to be a fitting description, at least based on the motorsport-inspired bodywork modifications.

A huge double rear spoiler is the most obvious addition. While it might be too unsubtle for some tastes, the intention is to generate increased downforce in conjunction with the front splitter and rear diffuser. Other major changes include the fitment of 20” wheels that sit beneath widened arches, larger front grilles and a pair of bonnet-mounted vents.

For now technical details are sparse, but Honda has confirmed that the Type R is going to have a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, VTEC-equipped engine. Crucially a turbocharger will also feature, resulting in an output of at least 276 bhp (205 kW / 280 PS). That would put the Civic roughly midway between the 246 bhp (184 kW / 250 PS) Ford Focus ST and 295 bhp (220 kW / 300 PS) Volkswagen Golf R in a power ranking.

European sales of the Civic Type R are due to begin sometime during 2015.
