2015 BMW M235i xDrive Coupé announced

Seeing as the xDrive all-wheel drive system has been available on M135i hatchback models for some time, BMW’s decision to now offer it with the closely-related M235i two-door isn’t much of a surprise.

The M235i xDrive features the familiar 322 bhp (240 kW / 326 PS) 3.0 litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is partnered by an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

However, thanks to extra traction, performance is marginally better. To illustrate the advantage, the M235i xDrive accelerates from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds. That’s 0.2 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel drive version manages.

Fuel economy does suffer slightly though, falling from 37.2 mpg (7.6 l/100km) to 36.2 mpg (7.8 l/100km) on the combined cycle. Similarly, carbon dioxide emissions are increased from 176 to 182 g/km.

BMW doesn’t currently sell the M135i xDrive in the UK, so whether or not the M235i xDrive Coupé will come here remains to be seen.
