Detroit Electric SP:01 project is still alive
Early in 2013 Detroit Electric unveiled its electric-powered SP:01 two-seat sports car. The intention was to begin production last August, but nothing happened.
Now though, with additional funding secured, it appears that the company is ready to have another go.
To start with, a UK factory has been established in Leamington Spa which will eventually employ 80 people. The Lotus-based SP:01 built there is going to differ slightly from the version originally shown, as its interior, styling and aerodynamics have all received attention.
In addition to the British facility (and a Detroit headquarters), Detroit Electric has also opened a European sales and marketing office in The Netherlands. The plan is to start sales across Europe and Asia towards the end of this year, followed soon afterwards by a United States launch.
Detroit Electric’s future strategy is even more ambitious. A saloon and 2+2 coupĂ© are in the pipeline, however those two models will be manufactured in Michigan.
