2015 Honda Civic Type R first view

Honda is making some bold claims for the new Civic Type R, saying that it “promises to be the most extreme and high-performing Type R yet”. And yes, the iconic NSX is being included in that comparison.

Power comes from a 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine which develops ‘more than’ 276 bhp (206 kW / 280 PS) with the aid of a turbocharger.

Delivered via a traditional six-speed manual gearbox, that output is set to put the Honda on a par with rivals such as the 271 bhp (201 kW / 275 PS) Renault Mégane Renaultsport 275 Trophy and 276 bhp (206 kW / 280 PS) Vauxhall GTC VXR.

To help keep the front-wheel drive Civic on the road, its specification includes adaptive dampers and a mechanical ‘steer axis’ system which is reckoned to minimise torque steer. For an even sportier drive, a ‘+R’ button will sharpen both the steering and throttle responses.

Sales of the Swindon-built 2015 Civic Type R are scheduled to begin sometime next year. Final specifications and pricing details are going to be announced closer to the car’s launch.
