2017 Ford GT unveiled

One of the undoubted stars at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit has been the all-new Ford GT.

Rather than follow the unashamed retro styling themes of its predecessor, the 2017 model is ultra-modern. That dramatic change in design direction is most obvious when viewed from above, as the GT’s lightweight carbon fibre bodywork forms a teardrop shape which is both striking and aerodynamically efficient.

Likewise, powertrain thinking has moved on considerably since the 2005 GT was launched with a supercharged 5.4 litre V8 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. For the updated version, Ford has decided on a mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 engine. It’ll produce more than 600 horsepower (about 450 kW) and send that output to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 2017 Ford GT is also going to feature innovations such as an active rear spoiler, carbon-ceramic brake discs, a configurable digital instrument display and fixed seats that are integrated into the car’s structure. Production is scheduled to begin late next year.
