2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility revealed

Ford’s Police Interceptor Utility - the USA’s best.-selling law enforcement vehicle - has been given an update.

As it’s based on the Explorer SUV, the Interceptor Utility’s exterior styling changes copy that model’s recently-announced facelift. Similarly, the interior gets a refreshed instrument panel plus an upgraded electrical system.

Standard equipment on the 2016 Interceptor Utility includes a rear-view camera with a dashboard-mounted 4” display screen, a tailgate release switch accessible from the front seats, 18” steel wheels and a heavy-duty suspension set-up.

Optionally available is a Surveillance Mode which, when it detects somebody approaching the vehicle’s rear, automatically locks all the doors and closes the driver’s window. In fact, buyers are almost being spoilt for choice because Ford is offering 125 special equipment packages and 25 different emergency lighting configurations.

Power is provided by a 3.7 litre V6 engine producing 304 bhp (226 kW / 308 PS). For those users requiring more performance, a 365 bhp (272 kW / 370 PS) turbocharged 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 can be ordered instead. Both alternatives come with a six-speed automatic transmission (which incorporates a more responsive Pursuit Mode) as well as standard all-wheel drive.

The 2016 Police Interceptor Utility makes its public debut at this week’s Chicago Auto Show. Deliveries are expected to begin in the summer.
