Audi S8 Plus launched

As its name suggests, the new Audi S8 Plus takes the regular S8 and adds some more performance.

Key to achieving that is an upgraded 4.0 litre V8 bi-turbo petrol engine. Power has been substantially increased from 512 bhp (382 kW / 520 PS) to 596 bhp (445 kW / 605 PS), while peak torque rises to 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) or 750 Nm (553 lb/ft) on overboost.

Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system, the result is a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.8 seconds.

Despite the extra output, top speed remains electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). However, the optional Dynamic Package (which also includes carbon-ceramic brakes) sees that figure lifted to 189 mph (305 km/h).

To provide some visual differentiation, the Plus version features a set of 21” alloy wheels, darkened taillight clusters, black bodywork trim and a carbon fibre front spoiler lip.

Recalibrated air suspension, a sports exhaust, power door closing, privacy glass and adaptive cruise control are part of the standard specification too.

Audi dealers will start accepting S8 Plus orders in October, ahead of the first deliveries in early 2016. Buyers should expect to pay quite a hefty premium, though. The UK on-the-road price is £97,700, which is £16,965 more than an ordinary S8 costs.
