Top 10: Facts about the 2018 Ford Fiesta ST
Ford has revealed some more details about its upcoming 2018 Fiesta ST, which will be unveiled at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
Here are ten things worth knowing about this new hot hatch:
1. Power comes from a three-cylinder petrol engine
The current trend for downsizing and fewer cylinders continues. Beneath the ST’s bonnet sits an all-aluminium, 1.5 litre, turbocharged EcoBoost unit that features variable cam timing and high-pressure fuel injection.
2. Output is up
In standard guise, the previous-generation 1.6 litre Fiesta ST produced 180 bhp
(134 kW / 182 PS) with 290 Nm (214 lb/ft) of peak torque. Despite having a smaller-capacity motor, the 2018 model boasts 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) and 290 Nm (214 lb/ft).
3. Performance is improved
Ford says the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint is ‘anticipated’ to take 6.7 seconds. Incidentally, that’s the same time achieved by last year’s limited edition Fiesta ST200.
4. Cylinder deactivation should benefit efficiency
Sometimes even three cylinders are too many, so one of them can be shut down under light loads. The restart process takes an imperceptible fourteen milliseconds.
5. Emissions are down
Thanks partly to the aforementioned cylinder deactivation, combined cycle carbon dioxide emissions are expected to be 114 g/km. Fuel economy stats haven’t been released yet, though.
6. There are three Drive Modes
Normal, Sport and Track settings can be selected. They govern the engine mapping, throttle response, steering feel and stability control behaviour.
7. Expect impressive handling
The chassis specification includes Torque Vectoring Control. By applying braking force to the inside front wheel during cornering, the system’s primary purpose is to reduce understeer.
8. Sound seems to be important
As well as an active exhaust valve, Ford has fitted Electronic Sound Enhancement. Together, they’re claimed to “deliver an even more satisfying driving experience” (although some owners might be more concerned with impressing bystanders).
9. Two body styles are going to be offered
Customers will be able to order their Fiesta ST with either three or five doors.
10. The launch date is a while away
Prospective purchasers need to be patient, because deliveries aren’t due to begin until early 2018.
