Smart pricing dips below £10k

Thanks to the introduction of a 'pure' version, prices for Smart's diminutive fortwo coupé now start at £9,995. This new entry-level trim grade is also being offered in five-door forfour guise for £10,490 – a modest £495 premium that buys a much more practical car.

A choice of two standard and seven cost-option paint colours is complemented by a black finish for the tridion safety cell and front grille. 15” steel wheels betray the pure's bargain status, while black fabric upholstery creates a rather austere interior ambiance.

As might be expected, equipment levels aren't especially high. Nevertheless, the Comfort Package (comprising height adjustment for the steering wheel and driver's seat, as well as heated and power-adjustable door mirrors), electric front windows, LED daytime running lights, remote-control central locking and the Smart Audio-System are all included.

Power comes from a normally-aspirated 999 cc three-cylinder petrol engine. It delivers 70 bhp (52 kW / 71 PS) to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Deliveries of the fortwo pure and forfour pure are scheduled to begin in July.
