2018 Formula 1 Safety Car unveiled
For 2018, the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is getting a new Safety Car. The Mercedes-AMG GT R – which replaces a GT S after three seasons – brings some more power and pace to the role.
Indeed, with a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 577 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS), the GT R can accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds. Its top speed meanwhile is 197 mph (318 km/h).
A roof-mounted light bar, bodywork graphics and a roll-over protection bar are the obvious items of extra equipment. However, apart from the addition of an AMG Track Package and ceramic brakes, the specification has been left fairly standard.
The 2018 F1 season begins this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix. Bernd Mayländer will once again be the Safety Car’s driver.
