A revised Mitsubishi Mirage line-up for 2019

Anonymous and innocuous are two words that could describe the Mitsubishi Mirage. While such unfortunate epithets are hard to shake off, some changes to the trim grade structure mean that canny buyers might want to give this supermini proper consideration.

The new entry-level Mirage 3 costs £11,295 on the road, which is £1,005 less than the superseded Juro version.

A decent equipment list includes 14” alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, keyless entry, power-folding door mirrors and electric windows all-round. Furthermore, manual air conditioning, a four-speaker audio system and Bluetooth connectivity come as standard, too.

Alternatively, the Mirage 4 is priced from £13,355. On the outside, this variant is distinguished by a set of 15” alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights and rear parking sensors. Inside, climate control, heated front seats, satellite navigation, a DAB radio and cruise control are among the upgrades.

Every Mirage is still powered by a 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engine that develops 79 bhp (59 kW / 80 PS) and 106 Nm (78 lb/ft) of peak torque.

With a five-speed manual gearbox, the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 12.7 seconds and the car’s top speed is 112 mph (180 km/h). 52.3 mpg (5.4 l/100km) on the WLTP combined cycle suggests good fuel economy, but CO2 emissions of 123 g/km aren’t great.

Spending £665 extra will see the Mirage 4 gain a continuously-variable automatic transmission. A trade-off for the added convenience is slightly less performance, as the 0-62 mph time increases to 13.5 seconds and top speed slips to 107 mph (173 km/h). Similarly, WLTP efficiency figures of 47.9 mpg (5.9 l/100km) and 133 g/km are marginally worse.

A five-year warranty completes the package.
