Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4Matic unveiled
As expected, Mercedes-AMG has announced a high-performance version of the four-door CLA Coupé.
Like the existing hatchback A 35 4Matic and the recently-announced A 35 4Matic Saloon, the new CLA 35 4Matic features a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine which produces 301 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS) with 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of peak torque.
That output is delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes just 4.9 seconds – 0.1 seconds slower than the saloon variant, incidentally – and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Body stiffness has been improved by the presence of a bolted aluminium ‘shear panel’ beneath the motor and an extra pair of diagonal braces at the front. Another special modification is AMG Dynamics which, in conjunction with the ESP stability control, applies the inside rear wheel’s brake to aid cornering.
Throttle response and gear-changing characteristics are governed by the ‘Slippery’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’, ‘Sport +’ and ‘Individual’ driving modes. A Race Start function is included as standard, but adaptive damping is on the options list.
Inside, the main highlight is a twin-screen Widescreen Cockpit. The instrument cluster portion has ‘Classic’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Supersport’ configurations, while the other display is primarily used for an MBUX infotainment system.
The CLA 35 4Matic is due to appear in public for the first time at the New York International Auto Show later this month. European market launches are scheduled to take place during August 2019.
