The 2020 American-spec Yaris is a Mazda

As the existing 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan is essentially a rebadged four-door Mazda 2, using exactly the same strategy for the new 2020 Yaris Hatchback is entirely logical. In fact, apart from the Toyota’s awkward front grille design, the two models look virtually identical.

Ordering a Yaris Hatchback should be fairly simple, because just two trim grades and one powertrain – a 106 bhp (79 kW / 107 PS) 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission – are being offered.

The entry-level LE features 16” alloy wheels, a reversing camera and a touchscreen-based infotainment system that’s compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Satellite navigation hardware is standard too, but bizarrely the SD card containing the required software is a dealer-supplied cost option.

In addition, the XLE variant gains LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, leatherette upholstery and climate control.

The 2020 Yaris Hatchback will make its début at the New York International Auto Show later this month. Prices have yet to be announced.
