Ford builds an electric Mustang Cobra Jet
Drag racing is a pretty simple discipline: prepare a car, then see how quickly it can travel along a straight and flat quarter-mile course. Electric powertrains should be ideally suited to such a task, given their potential for delivering huge amounts of instant torque (and range anxiety is unlikely to be an issue).
Recognising that, Ford Performance has been busy developing the pure-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. As the 1400 suffix indicates, an output of over 1,400 horsepower (around 1,045 kW) is the aim. Peak torque meanwhile will be at least 1,490 Nm (1,100 lb/ft).
Consequently, a low-eight-second quarter-mile time is expected.
The Cobra Jet 1400 is due to appear in public for the first time later this year, circumstances permitting.
