Jeep adds two e-Hybrid models to its range

A new mild-hybrid powertrain has been introduced for the Jeep Renegade and Compass. The system – known as e-Hybrid – is reckoned to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15 percent compared to its non-hybrid predecessor.

e-Hybrid is based around a Miller-cycle turbocharged petrol engine with an integrated belt-driven starter-generator. This 1.5-litre, four-cylinder unit sends up to 130 PS (128 bhp / 95 kW) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The other major component is a 48-volt 20 PS (20 bhp / 15 kW) electric motor which provides an additional 55 Nm (40 lb-ft) of torque (equivalent to 135 Nm / 100 lb-ft of gearbox input). Regenerative braking and an e-Coasting function take care of energy recovery.

Ordinarily, the electric motor uses what Jeep calls e-Boosting to supplement the combustion engine’s output and improve overall efficiency.

However, various modes allow silent pure-electric running, albeit at low speeds over short distances. Among them are e-Launch, e-Creeping, e-Queueing and e-Parking.

To mark the e-Hybrid’s arrival, both the Renegade and Compass are available in special Upland guise. Distinguishing features include Matter Azur paintwork, a black roof, gloss black alloy wheels, and a MetaKrome bronze finish on the front grille and the skid plates. Inside, the seats are covered in Seaqual, a polyester fabric that’s partly made from recycled plastics taken out of the sea.
