Goodbye CL-Class, hello S-Class Coupé

Mercedes-Benz has abandoned the CL-Class nameplate for its most luxurious two-door. Instead the latest version, which has just been unveiled, will be called the S-Class Coupé.

With its heavily scalloped body sides the new arrival is unmistakeably a contemporary Mercedes. At 5,027 mm (16’ 6”) long and 1,899 mm (6’ 3”) wide the S-Class Coupé is certainly huge, but those dimensions are ably disguised by neat proportions and large wheels. In fact, the design works well from all angles, even if the rear end is somewhat anonymous.

Some of the car’s most intriguing features are on the options list. They include a head-up display, Magic Body Control - a device that tilts the car by up to 2.5° into bends - and headlights incorporating 47 Swarovski crystals apiece. Furthermore those buyers who want fragranced or ionised air pumped into the cabin might want to consider the Air Balance package. Even the central armrest (electrically adjustable of course) can be heated.

Initially just one engine is going to be available. A 4,663 cc biturbo V8, it produces 449 bhp (335 kW / 455 PS) with a substantial 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) of peak torque.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé is due to make its public debut at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show. Market launches will then follow later this year.
