Mercedes unveils the 2015 S 65 AMG Coupé

As expected, Mercedes-Benz has slotted its 5,980 cc, twin-turbo V12 engine into the new two-door S-Class. The result is the S 65 AMG Coupé which, like the saloon version, boasts 620 bhp (463 kW / 630 PS) and a peak torque figure of 1,000 Nm (737 lb/ft).

Given that output, performance is naturally impressive. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 4.1 seconds for instance, while top speed is electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

However, the S 65 AMG doesn’t seem to have much of an advantage over the V8-powered S 63 AMG. Indeed, the lesser model completes the same acceleration benchmark in 4.3 seconds, but its time drops to 3.9 seconds when the optional 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system is fitted.

The rear-wheel drive chassis of the S 65 AMG features Magic Body Control, a suite of technologies that incorporates Active Body Control and Road Surface Scan. The former tilts the car by up to 2.5° going into bends to reduce lateral acceleration effects, whereas the latter uses a stereo video camera to tailor the damper settings according to upcoming surface changes.

Deliveries of the S 65 AMG Coupé are due to begin at the end of September. Prices for the UK and Germany have been set at £183,065 and €244,009.50 respectively.
