Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé unveiled

This September will see the launch of a high-performance version of Mercedes-Benz’s new S-Class Coupé.

The two-door S 63 AMG won’t be lacking pace, as it employs the same 5,461 cc V8 biturbo engine and seven-speed Speedshift MCT automatic transmission as the saloon.

Indeed, 576 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 900 Nm (663 lb/ft) of peak torque are sufficient to get the large coupé from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.3 seconds. Specify the optional 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system and that benchmark time drops to 3.9 seconds, although the top speed remains electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Interestingly the chassis set-up depends on the drivetrain. The rear-wheel drive model comes equipped with Magic Body Control, which combines AMG’s sports suspension with Road Surface Scan and Active Body Control. The former function uses a stereo video camera to prepare the dampers for upcoming surface undulations, while the latter tilts the car by up to 2.5° going into bends to reduce any lateral acceleration effects.

Alternatively, the S 63 AMG Coupé 4Matic gets the Airmatic air-suspension and ADS Plus adaptive damping systems. Other unique components on this car include a larger front anti-roll bar and a stiffer rear subframe carrier.

To complicate things further, a special ‘Edition 1’ variant will be offered for one year after sales begin. Among its exclusive features are two-tone Designo nappa leather upholstery, a Dinamica micro fibre roof lining, high-gloss black poplar wood trim, illuminated doorsill plates and Night View Assist Plus. Completing the package are some very bling LED headlights that incorporate Swarovski crystals.

The S 63 AMG Coupé is due to make its first public appearance at next month’s New York International Auto Show. Prices have yet to be confirmed.
