Ariel launches Atom 3.5

Image
Ariel has revealed the latest incarnation of its minimalist Atom. As the suffix implies, the 3.5 version is a development of the Atom 3 and it features both technical and cosmetic updates. A revised chassis incorporates tweaks previously seen on the Mugen Limited Edition and V8-powered models, which means improved torsional rigidity and stiffness. To help make the most of those changes, the dampers have been recalibrated and there are different engine mounts. Visually, the Atom 3.5 is identifiable by its new twin projector headlights and the used of LEDs for the indicators and rear lights. There is also a slightly restyled bonnet section, plus a new LCD instrument display that can be augmented by a data logger for track use. Power continues to come from a 2.0 litre Honda iVTEC that develops 245 bhp (182 kW / 248 PS) in normally-aspirated form, or 315 bhp (234 kW / 319 PS) when equipped with the optional supercharger. 700 bhp Ariel Atom

The standard Ariel Atom is pretty bonkers already, but that hasn’t stopped American tuner DDMWorks upping the car’s power a staggering 700 bhp (521 kW / 709 PS). That dramatic increase has been made possible by substituting the usual engine with a 2.0 litre Ecotec unit from General Motors, and then fitting it with a Garrett GTX 3076 turbocharger as well as a supercharger. Also included in the conversion are a revised fuelling system, a replacement intercooler, an upgraded exhaust and a pair of boost controllers. To help keep the Atom on the road, DDMWorks attaches 16” wheels at the front and 17” items at the rear, all of which come shod with Toyo R888 tyres. Perhaps of more use though - especially for less experienced drivers - is the cockpit switch that limits the power to either 450 bhp (335 kW / 456 PS) or 575 bhp (428 kW / 582 PS). Unfortunately no performance figures have been released, and pricing is upon application.
