Morgan Plus E concept

Image
One of the most interesting debutants at this year’s Geneva Motor Show has been the electrically-powered Morgan Plus E concept. Developed by Morgan in collaboration with Zytek and Radshape, and funded partly by a Niche Vehicle Network Programme grant, power comes from a 94 bhp (70 kW / 95 PS) electric motor that develops 300 Nm (221 lb/ft) of torque. However, unlike most other electric cars, drive to the Morgan’s rear wheels is via a traditional five-speed manual gearbox and clutch. That unusual configuration was chosen to maximise both efficiency and driving pleasure, as described by Steve Morris, Morgan Operations Director: “We wanted to see how much fun you can have in an electric sportscar, so we have built one to help us find out. “The Plus E combines Morgan’s traditional look with high technology construction and a powertrain that delivers substantial torque instantly at any speed. With the manual gearbox to increase both touring range and driver involvement, it wil...

On the inside, black leather upholstery and matching carpets come as standard, while the dashboard is polished tawny ash. Completing the interior package is a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel. But the enhancements for the special version aren’t only cosmetic...

Morgan Threewheeler

Image
The Morgan Threewheeler is returning to the roads, 58 years after production of the original version ceased. Due to go on sale in 2011, the new car will be powered by a 1,800 cc Harley-Davidson V-twin with around 100 bhp (74 kW / 101 PS), connected to a Mazda five-speed transmission. That should be enough to accelerate the 500 kg lightweight from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, before taking it onto a top speed of a windy 115 mph (185 km/h) - flying goggles might be a good idea. The Threewheeler is constructed from super formed aluminium bodywork over a tubular steel chassis frame. Additional protection is provided by individual rollover hoops behind the driver and passenger seats, but there’s no hood to keep the weather off. Aviation clearly provided the inspiration for the design of the cockpit, which features a black anodised dash panel, aluminium 'aircraft' toggle switches and a 'bomb release' style starter button. In the UK at least, the Morgan Threewh...
