Ford is planning to exhibit three modified examples of its electric Mustang Mach-E at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.

A one-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra has been unveiled at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Created to commemorate the late Carroll Shelby, the car is a collaboration between Shelby American, Ford Motor Company and Ford Racing. And it’s certainly a fitting tribute because, thanks to a Whipple supercharger, power from the V8 engine is up from an already impressive 662 bhp (493 kW / 671 PS) to an astronomical 850 bhp (633 kW / 861 PS). To cope with such a huge output, the 20 inch diameter wheels are 13 inches wide at the rear, and they sit beneath specially extended arches. The bonnet is also unique, and the GT500 Cobra has been finished in the iconic colour scheme of Guardsman Blue paintwork with Wimbledon White stripes. Shelby American has unveiled its 2013 GT350. Based on the Ford Mustang GT, the changes aren’t too extensive but include the fitment of Recaro front seats and a redesigned rear valance. Power continues to come from an upgraded version of the GT’s 5.0 litre V8. Its output is increased from the stock 402 bhp (300 kW / 407 PS) to 430 bhp (320 kW / 435 PS), although this rises to around 450 bhp (335 kW / 456 PS) with the newly-available optional cold air package. For anyone wanting even more performance, a Ford Racing supercharger can be specified. The result is either 525 bhp (391 kW / 532 PS) or 624 bhp (465 kW / 632 PS), which is getting close to the 662 bhp (493 kW / 671 PS) of the 2013 GT500. Traditionally, the GT350 has only been offered with a limited paintwork choice, but for the 2013 model year buyers will be able to choose from all of the factory colours offered by Ford for the Mustang. Outputs from the 5.8 litre, supercharged V8 that powers the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 have been SAE-certified at an impressive 662 bhp (493 kW / 671 PS) and 855 Nm (631 lb/ft) of torque. Those figures are slightly more than Ford estimated when the GT500 was first announced back in February, and reinforce the claim that it features the world’s most powerful production V8 engine. Developed by Ford’s SVT division, the performance Mustang has been engineered to be driveable right through the rev range, and to that end ninety percent of peak torque is usefully available from 2,200 rpm up to 5,800 rpm. Although no acceleration stats have been released, Ford is saying that the GT500 coupé is capable of hitting 200 mph (321 km/h). Fortunately the chassis has also been tweaked to cope, despite the presence of an archaic live rear axle set-up. The new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible can boast 650 bhp (484 kW / 659 PS) and 813 Nm (600 lb/ft) of torque, thanks to its upgraded 5.8 litre supercharged engine. According to Ford, that huge output exceeds any other production V8, making the GT500 one of the most powerful open-top cars available. Indeed, even exotica such as the Ferrari 458 Spider, Bentley Continental GTC and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster can’t claim as much horsepower and, with an ability to reach over 200 mph (321 km/h), the Shelby should certainly have the potential to embarrass them in a straight line. However, whether it would be the same situation around a circuit - even with the optional Performance Package fitted to the GT500, which includes electronically adjustable Bilstein dampers - is another question altogether. Fifty years in business for a specialist manufacturer is something to celebrate, so it’s unsurprising that Shelby American is producing some special versions of its cars to mark its golden jubilee. 50th Anniversary Editions of the Shelby GTS, GT350 and GT500 Super Snake will be available, although just fifty white and fifty black examples of each are going to be built to guarantee exclusivity. All come with gold stripes, special wheels, six-piston front brakes, 50th anniversary badges, unique interiors, a car cover and a special vehicle identification number. And that’s about it, which is a bit underwhelming, although buyers do also get to go to the Shelby factory in Las Vegas for a handover ceremony. Starting prices for the post-title 50th Anniversary Edition packages range from $19,995 for the GTS V6 to $59,995 for the GT500 Super Snake, plus the cost of the base Mustang.
