Audi is getting ready to enter the Dakar Rally for the first time in 2022. Its contender for the gruelling two-week event is the RS Q e-tron, which is now undergoing initial testing.

From 2012 to 2015, Mini was victorious in the car category of every Dakar Rally. Then, ignoring the received wisdom that asserted all-wheel drive would be necessary for success, Peugeot won in 2016 and 2017 using the rear-wheel drive 2008 DKR and 3008 DKR .

Having won the Dakar Rally in 2016 and 2017, Peugeot is very keen to repeat the feat next January. So the 3008DKR – this year's first-, second- and third-placed car – is being replaced by the 3008DKR Maxi.

1987's Paris-Dakar Rally is probably best remembered for being the first time that a Peugeot 205 T16 won the event. However, a Nissan Patrol was also successful, finishing in ninth place overall and taking a victory in the diesel class.

Mini's latest cross-country rally car is simply called the John Cooper Works Rally. Developed in conjunction with X-raid, it's primary task will be to beat Peugeot (and every other challenger) in the 2017 Dakar Rally.

Next year’s Dakar Rally entry list is going to include a special Hilux built by Toyota South Africa Motors and Toyota Gazoo Racing. Compared to the showroom model, it’s definitely very different.

On its Dakar Rally debut earlier this year, the Peugeot 2008 DKR didn't perform brilliantly. In fact, none of the team's three cars managed to finish in the top ten, thanks to a combination of reliability problems and accidents.

The Isuzu Motorsports International Off-Road Race Team has announced its return to the Dakar Rally in 2013. The gruelling event, which begins on the 5th of January, runs for fifteen days and covers over 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometres) between Lima, Peru and Chile.

Back in July, Honda announced that in 2013 it would be entering a works team in the gruelling Dakar Rally for the first time since 1989. Now, at the Intermot show in Cologne, the firm has unveiled the motorcycle that Team HRC will be competing with. Called the CRF450 Rally, it’s based on the existing CRF450X enduro racer. As expected, there are extensive bodywork changes, but there are modifications beneath the skin, too. Perhaps the most significant of these is the use of an electronic fuel injection system for the single-cylinder engine, instead of the CRF450X’s Keihin carburettor. The CRF450 Rally is due to make its competition debut later this month in the Morocco Rally. Then it’s onto the Dakar Rally, which takes place in January and runs through Peru, Chile and Argentina.
