Currently undergoing testing in unpainted prototype form, it has been designed to comply with the latest T1 category regulations. While many components are carried over from the previous Dakar Hilux (which won the event in 2019), there have been some major improvements.

For instance, suspension travel is up by 70 mm (2.8”) to 350 mm (13.8”), and a larger 37” tyre diameter is now allowed. Power comes from a modified version of the 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine that’s usually found in the Land Cruiser GR-S. Output figures for the GR DKR Hilux T1+ have yet to be announced, though.

Toyota Gazoo Racing has already named its four driver / navigator crews. They are Nasser Al-Attiyah / Mathieu Baumel, Giniel de Villiers / Dennis Murphy, Henk Lategan / Brett Cummings and Shameer Variawa / Danie Stassen.

Once again, Saudi Arabia will host the Dakar Rally in 2022. The start date is the 2nd of January.
