Finalised Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ unveiled

Following prototype testing, the Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ is almost ready to compete in the 2022 Dakar Rally.

Built to comply with the latest T1 category regulations, it features a tubular frame chassis and composite bodywork. Dry weight is 2,000 kg (4,409 lb), as per the minimum figure stipulated by the FIA.

Power is provided by a mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine that’s usually found in the Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport. Thanks to various modifications, up to 405 PS (400 bhp / 298 kW) and 660 Nm (486 lb/ft) of torque are sent to all four wheels via a Sadev six-speed sequential transmission.

Compared to Toyota’s previous Dakar contender, suspension travel has been increased from 280 mm (11.0”) to 350 mm (13.7”). To complement that change, the 17” wheels are now shod with larger 37” BF Goodrich tyres (which are also wider than before).

Toyota Gazoo Racing is preparing four examples of the GR DKR Hilux T1+ for next year’s Dakar Rally. The driver / navigator crews will be Nasser Al-Attiyah / Mathieu Baumel, Giniel de Villiers / Dennis Murphy, Henk Lategan / Brett Cummings, and Shameer Variawa / Danie Stassen.

The event starts on the 2nd of January 2022 in Saudi Arabia.
