Range Rover Sport SVR vs. its rivals

Jaguar Land Rover’s recently-created Special Vehicle Operations division has unveiled the Range Rover Sport SVR, its first production model.

With a 5.0 litre supercharged V8 engine, a two-stage active exhaust and upgraded height-adjustable air suspension, the new arrival has been engineered with high performance as a key objective. An impressively quick Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 8 minutes 14 seconds is evidence that that aim seems to have been achieved.

However, off-road ability hasn’t been sacrificed in the process. The Range Rover Sport SVR retains permanent four-wheel drive, a locking centre differential and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. Furthermore, it has a maximum wade depth of 850 mm (33.5”), wheel travel is claimed to be class-leading and a locking rear axle diff is on the options list.

Such a blend of talents is going to be important, because there are plenty of fast luxury SUVs already available including the BMW X5 xDrive50i M Sport, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Comparing the main stats for those four rivals against the Range Rover Sport SVR shows that all are fairly evenly matched, but their prices do vary considerably:
