2015 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé unveiled

The GLE Coupé is the first new model launched by Mercedes-Benz that adopts the brand’s revised product nomenclature. ‘GL’ means it’s an SUV, ‘E’ denotes a member of the E-Class family and, in this case at least, ‘Coupé’ signifies a low fastback roofline. Put simply, the latest addition to the line-up is a direct rival for BMW’s X6.

Initially three different versions are going to be available. All come as standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive, the Dynamic Select driving mode system and a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission.

The range-topping GLE 450 AMG marks the debut of the AMG Sport trim grade. Although not intended to be a fully-fledged AMG variant, it does feature air suspension, variable damping, 21” lightweight alloy wheels, unique bumpers and front sports seats. To help give a sporty feel, 60% of the upgraded engine’s torque goes to the rear wheels instead of the usual 50%.
