2016 Mercedes-Benz Citan announced
Changes to the Mercedes-Benz Citan should make the small van more environmentally friendly and nicer to use.
Technical upgrades have been focussed on the engines. The Euro 6-standard 1.2 litre petrol unit, for example, still produces 112 bhp (84 kW / 114 PS) but it now features a 'kickdown' mode. This lifts maximum torque from 175 Nm (129 lb/ft) to 205 Nm (151 lb/ft) for up to 20 seconds when accelerating in second, third or fourth gear – a handy boost when overtaking. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the first time, too.
In light of the recent Volkswagen emissions scandal, the approach taken by Mercedes-Benz to ensure the Citan's 1.5 litre turbo diesel motor complies with Euro 6 regulations is intriguing. Rather than an AdBlue-based selective catalytic reduction system, “internal engine measures” and a storage-type NOx catalytic converter have been employed instead.
Diesel buyers have a choice of three outputs – 73 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS), 88 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) or 108 bhp (81 kW / 110 PS) – while the Euro 6 equipment actually yields an extra 20 Nm (14 lb/ft) of torque.
Specification enhancements across the Citan range are limited, with revised instruments and a new interior handle for the tailgate being the highlights.
The options list has grown a bit longer, though. Its additional items include a tilting sunroof (for passenger-carrying versions only), a reversing camera, touchscreen satellite navigation and a double front passenger seat.
Dealers are accepting orders for the 2016 Citan now.
