American-spec 2017 Civic Hatchback unveiled

In what is a sign of changing tastes, Honda is getting ready to offer its tenth-generation Civic in five-door hatchback form across North America. This new addition to the range, which will arrive in dealers later this year, joins the existing sedan and coupé models.

Power comes from a 1.5 litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection, turbocharged petrol engine. For the LX, EX and EX-L trim grades, output is 174 bhp (130 kW / 176 PS) with 220 Nm (162 lb/ft) of peak torque. Sport and Sport Touring variants gain an extra six horsepower, a very modest uplift that probably won't have much effect on performance.

As standard a continuously-variable transmission is fitted, but a six-speed manual alternative is also available for the LX, EX and Sport.

The 2017 Civic Hatchback is going to be manufactured at Honda's Swindon plant in the UK. Prices have yet to be announced.
