Volkswagen’s Crafter is ready for police duty
Volkswagen has unveiled a Crafter-based Police Support Unit at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham.
The conversion, which was carried out by Coleman Milne Specialist Vehicles, uses a long-wheelbase five-tonne Crafter Trendline van as its starting point. Power comes from a 2.0 litre turbo-diesel engine that delivers 174 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS) via an automatic transmission.
As well as the obligatory police livery and emergency lighting, the exterior gains additional side windows. Furthermore, the regular windscreen has been replaced by a much stronger item made from flexible Kasiglas reinforced plastic. Because the material resists damage so well, a separate slide-down metal mesh guard isn’t needed.
Inside, extra seats are installed for the PSU’s crew. Behind them, there’s a half-width prisoner cell and bespoke racking that can hold riot shields and helmets.
