2022 Lexus LX revealed

Moscow might be considered an unusual city for a vehicle’s global launch, but that was the location chosen by Lexus to unveil the fourth-generation LX. Actually, the decision made a lot of sense, because past versions of this imposing luxury SUV were popular in Russia and across eastern Europe.

The new LX is based on the latest Toyota Land Cruiser, so it still uses traditional body-on-frame construction. However, overall weight has been reduced by 200 kg (440 lb) versus the previous model, thanks partly to the adoption of an aluminium roof panel and changes to the Active Height Control suspension.

“Sophistication with a powerful and overwhelming presence” is how Lexus describes the LX’s styling ethos. Accordingly, the front end is dominated by a massive grille, which on some variants features bold chrome spindles set in a frameless design.

Inside, the centre console incorporates two touchscreens. The upper 12.3” item usually shows navigation and audio information, but switches to Multi-Terrain Monitor mode when driving off-road. Four cameras provide 360° vision, while Back Underfloor View gives the illusion of a transparent vehicle bottom. The lower 7.0” display manages the climate control and Multi-Terrain Select functions.

As an alternative to the regular seven-seat interior, a more comfortable four-seat VIP trim grade has been introduced. With the latter, passengers in the rear benefit from their own control panel, reading lights, sunshades and extra air conditioning vents.

Customers will get a choice of two V6 twin-turbo engines that are both mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission:
  • LX 600 – 3.5-litre petrol, 415 PS (409 bhp / 305 kW) plus 650 Nm (479 lb-ft)
  • LX 500d – 3.3-litre diesel, 299 PS (295 bhp / 220 kW) plus 700 Nm (516 lb-ft)
