BMW unveils the 8 x Jeff Koons limited edition

In 2010, Jeff Koons produced a one-off M3 GT2 Art Car for BMW. Now, the American artist and the German manufacturer have collaborated to create the 8 x Jeff Koons, a limited-run model based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupé.

Explaining his design, Jeff Koons said, “It is sporty and flashy as well as minimalist and conceptual… On the car, the lines are getting bigger on their journey from the hood towards the trunk, creating a sense of forward movement just as the ‘POP!’ and the vapor thrust design elements do.

“The blue color resembles the vastness of space and I like the idea of the car being a global car. What matters is how we relate to each other and our awareness of everything we are surrounded by. For the driver and all passengers, there is a heightened state of pleasure. This is what my car has to offer.”

Vinyl wrap isn’t used to achieve the end result, though. Rather, 200 worker-hours are spent painting all eleven colours onto the bodywork at BMW’s Dingolfing plant.

99 examples of the 8 x Jeff Koons will be built. One of them is due to be auctioned for charity in New York on the 4th of April, but customers can place orders for the rest on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pricing is available upon request.
