Mercedes-AMG launches the W08 EQ Power+

Amended Formula One regulations for 2017 raise one obvious question: will Mercedes-AMG continue to dominate both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships?

To maximise the chances of that happening, the team has created a new car named W08 EQ Power+. The addition of the ‘EQ Power+’ suffix is really a marketing exercise, because it‘s the label that’s going to be applied to future road-going Mercedes-AMG hybrid and electric models.

Just 17% of components were carried over from 2016’s W07. Substantially modified elements include the M08 Power Unit, which has been designed to cope with greater physical loads and increased full-throttle running.

Commenting on the upcoming season, Team Principal Toto Wolff said, “The new rules for 2017 were designed to make the fastest F1 cars ever through a big increase in aerodynamic performance.

“They should be more physical to drive and hopefully more spectacular for the fans to watch. The proof will come in the opening races but we have probably achieved that target.”

Another major change is the arrival of Valtteri Bottas as a replacement for Nico Rosberg. According to the Finnish driver, “It has been a busy winter for me since signing with Mercedes and we have tried to make the most of the time we have had.

“We’ve been going day by day, making the most of each one, spending a lot of time in Brackley and going through as much stuff as possible with the engineers.

“I feel well prepared in such a short time but, of course, the learning curve is still steep and I’m getting more useful information every day. It’s up to us to make the most out of the time together.”
