An eight-speed DCT for the Hyundai Veloster N

Using the Veloster N’s new dual-clutch transmission in manual mode is going to be an involved experience, because it has eight gear ratios. That said, there are some worthwhile benefits versus the regular six-speed manual gearbox, even if drivers just stick to the automatic setting.

Acceleration is quicker, for instance. The Veloster N – which is powered by a 271 bhp (202 kW / 275 PS) 2.0 litre petrol engine – can usually sprint from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.1 seconds. With the DCT option, that time falls to just 5.6 seconds.

Furthermore, a DCT function called N Grin Shift (yes, really) lets the turbocharger overboost for twenty seconds. Consequently, peak torque temporarily increases from 353 Nm (260 lb/ft) to 377 Nm (278 lb/ft).

Other DCT features include N Power Shift and N Track Sense Shift. The former minimise torque reductions when changing up, while the latter optimises shift patterns.

Sales of the 2020 Veloster N are set to begin in South Korea this month. Launches in other selected markets are then due to follow, but availability in Europe is highly unlikely.
