The Hyundai i30 gets a facelift for 2020

A subtle restyle, some new technologies and the introduction of mild-hybrid powertrains should help to maintain the appeal of the Hyundai i30. This updated C-segment contender – which continues to be offered in Hatchback, Fastback and Wagon guises – is due to be unveiled at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show.

Anybody who’s not a dedicated Hyundai spotter might struggle to notice the design changes. Nevertheless, the front grille is slightly wider and the headlights are slimmer, while the rear gets revised LED light clusters and a different bumper.

Inside, the i30 is now available with a 7” digital instrument display, a 10.25” central touchscreen and Bluelink telematics. Phone mirroring and wireless phone charging can be specified too.

Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of safety aids has been improved, thanks to three extra features. They are Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (provides a warning if the vehicle ahead starts moving off), Lane Following Assist (adjusts the steering to keep the i30 centred in its lane) and Rear Collision-avoidance Assist (prevents accidents when reversing). What’s more, the addition of an eCall function means that the emergency services are called automatically after an airbag activation.

Customers will have a choice of four engines:
  • 1.0 T-GDi three-cylinder turbocharged petrol
    118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS)
    172 Nm (126 lb/ft)
  • 1.0 T-GDi 48V three-cylinder turbocharged petrol
    118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS)
    172 Nm (126 lb/ft)
  • 1.5 T-GDi 48V four-cylinder turbocharged petrol
    157 bhp (117 kW / 160 PS)
    253 Nm (186 lb/ft)
  • 1.6 CRDi 48V four-cylinder turbocharged diesel
    134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS)
    280 Nm (206 lb/ft) manual / 320 Nm (236 lb/ft) DCT
All can be specified with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The ‘48V’ options incorporate a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

In the UK, the 1.5 T-GDi 48V is being reserved exclusively for the Hatchback N Line and Fastback N Line. These performance-inspired variants also benefit from recalibrated suspension and steering settings.
