Hyundai introduces the Kona Hybrid

Hyundai is adding another powertrain option to its Kona range. The new Hybrid, which will sit alongside the existing Electric and internal-combustion versions, is due to arrive at dealers in August.

Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2020) Front Side

It features a 103 bhp (77 kW / 105 PS) 1.6 litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection, Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a 43 bhp (32 kW / 43 PS) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor. Also fitted is a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack.

Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2020) Dashboard

The system’s total output of 139 bhp (104 kW / 141 PS) with 265 Nm (195 lb/ft) of peak torque is delivered via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Performance is probably best described as adequate, because the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 11.2 seconds and the top speed is 99 mph (160 km/h).

Hyundai Kona Hybrid (2020) Rear Side

If 16” wheels are fitted, then the Kona Hybrid can achieve 72.4 mpg (3.9 l/100km) on the combined cycle while emitting 90 g/km of CO2. Opting for 18” rims instead sees efficiency worsen to 65.6 mpg (4.3 l/100km) and 99 g/km. An important point to note is that those figures were assessed using the outdated NEDC measure, rather than the more realistic WLTP process.

Prices haven’t been announced yet.
