Return of the Volkswagen California Beach
As an expensive van-based people-carrier with rudimentary accommodation facilities, the new California Beach is certainly a niche product. This returning member of the Volkswagen range is being offered in two versions.
Both come with a manually-operated elevating roof, plus a camping table and two folding chairs. The only available powertrain comprises a 148 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) 2.0 litre turbo-diesel engine and a seven-speed DSG transmission.
The California Beach Tour features sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle. Inside, five seats are standard, but a sixth and seventh can be added as options. Prices (including VAT but excluding on-the-road costs) start at £52,062.
Alternatively, the £52,302 California Beach Camp is slightly better suited to overnight stays, thanks to a pull-out awning and a very basic kitchen unit that incorporates a single gas hob. It has only one sliding side door, and either four or five seats.
Volkswagen dealers will begin accepting California Beach orders later this month. The first deliveries are then scheduled to take place in March next year.
