2021 Volkswagen Caddy California revealed
Volkswagen has unveiled its latest compact camper van, which is based on the all-new fifth-generation Caddy. It’s been named California, in an effort to create strong familial links to the renowned Transporter California and larger Crafter Grand California.
When sales begin towards the end of this year, the Caddy California will be available with a body length of 4,501 mm (14’ 9”). However, if extra room is needed, then a longer 4,853 mm (15’ 11”) version is due to arrive later in 2021.
Inside, there’s a double bed that features comfort-enhancing cup springs. During the day the frame and mattress are stowed neatly above the boot area, but at night they unfold to form a 1,980 mm by 1,070 mm (6’ 5” by 3’ 6”) sleeping platform. Unlike previous Caddy campers, the second-row seats don’t help to support the bed structure, so their removal before a trip is now possible.
For privacy, magnets and other fasteners attach curtains to the windows and optional panoramic glass sunroof. The rearmost side windows are usually covered by storage bags that are able to hold 5 kg (11 lb) each.
A pull-out kitchenette is another cost option. Accessible only when the back door is open, this basic unit incorporates a single-hob gas cooker, a vented gas bottle locker and a cutlery tray. A bag containing a table and two chairs does come as standard, though.
Customers might also be tempted by a substantial free-standing modular awning that’s offered as an accessory. Erected using inflatable airbeams rather than conventional poles, it attaches to the rear of the Caddy and can provide sleeping accommodation for two additional people.
The initial engine line-up comprises two turbocharged diesels with outputs of 74 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS) and 120 bhp (90 kW / 122 PS) respectively. While most examples of the Caddy California are likely to have front-wheel drive, some buyers may choose to specify 4Motion all-wheel drive instead.
Prices have yet to be announced.
