2021 Volkswagen Caddy first view

Volkswagen has unveiled an all-new Caddy compact van. The 2021 model is built on the brand’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, so its underpinnings are shared with various other vehicles including the latest Golf and Touran.

As before, the Caddy is going to be offered in both regular and Maxi long-wheelbase guises. Customers will have a choice of panel van, passenger-carrying MPV or camper body styles.

Numerous technologies appear on a Caddy for the first time, which is hardly surprising considering the previous-generation version was originally launched way back in 2003.

Standard or optional items include keyless entry and start, full LED lighting and a power-closing function for the sliding side doors and rear tailgate. Inside, one particular highlight is a Digital Cockpit that uses a configurable screen instead of conventional analogue instruments.

Several assistance systems also make their Caddy débuts. Semi-autonomous driving is possible thanks to Travel Assist, while Side Assist and Trailer Assist should make manoeuvring and towing easier.

Initially, electrification won’t feature in the powertrain line-up. However, the Euro 6-compliant 2.0 litre diesel engines are all equipped with two AdBlue-based catalytic converters to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The only alternative envisaged for the UK market is a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol unit.

Volkswagen dealers are due to start accepting Caddy orders in October, ahead of deliveries beginning early next year.
