2020 Volkswagen California camper revealed
Ahead of a public début at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon later this month, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released the first proper images of its revised California.
Being based on the latest Transporter 6.1, the new camper van features a restyled front end, an updated dashboard and electromechanical power steering (instead of the previous hydraulic set-up). The familiar interior layout is pretty much unchanged, although there are some improvements.
For example, sleeping on the ‘upstairs’ bed should be a nicer experience, thanks to the introduction of a sprung base and darker grey canvas sides for the elevating roof. Furthermore, the sliding bench – which still converts into the ‘downstairs’ double bed – gains a lounger mode.
The ambience has been subtly altered, too. Palladium Grey seat fabric is complemented by either a Graphite Grey or a Bright Oak finish for the furniture units. Aluminium handles are used throughout the habitation area, plus the access covers for the cooker, sink and fridge are now secured by push buttons.
Another enhancement sees the monochrome display panel in the overhead console replaced by a colour touchscreen. This controls all of the camping functions, including auxiliary heating and a vehicle level indicator.
Volkswagen intends to offer the 2020 California in Beach, Coast and range-topping Ocean guises. Power will be provided by a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine, with either front- or all-wheel drive.
UK prices have yet to be announced.
