BMW Motorrad launches the R 18 Classic
A touring version of the new R 18 cruiser was pretty much inevitable – and here it is. The R 18 Classic gains some extra items of equipment that should make longer two-up journeys a realistic prospect.
They include a windscreen, saddle bags and a pillion seat (all of which can be removed). Additional LED headlights, a 16” front wheel and cruise control are part of the enhanced specification, too.
Like a regular R 18, the Classic variant features a 1,802 cc ‘Big Boxer’ two-cylinder engine. Consequently, peak output is 90 bhp (67 kW / 91 PS), while the maximum torque figure is 158 Nm (116 lb-ft). As befits this type of bike, at least 150 Nm (110 lb-ft) is available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.
There’s a choice of ‘Rock’, ‘Roll’ and ‘Rain’ riding modes, plus ASC (automatic stability control) and MSR (engine drag torque control) come as standard. A fully-fuelled kerb weight of 365 kg (805 lb) might mean that reverse assist and hill start control are deemed necessary as well, but unfortunately they’re both cost options.
Initially, customers in the UK will only be able to order the special R 18 Classic First Edition model that combines black paintwork with white pinstripes and plenty of chrome. On-the-road prices start at £20,980.
