BMW Motorrad unveils the R 18 cruiser
Following last year’s two concept bikes, the production version of the BMW R 18 is now here. It’s the brand’s first cruiser since the R 1200 C which was built between 1997 and 2004.
Long and low proportions define the new arrival’s look. An overall length of 2,440 mm (96.1”) is combined with a saddle height of only 690 mm (27.2”), something that many owners will probably appreciate given a hefty unladen (but fully-fuelled) weight of 345 kg (760 lbs).
A huge 1,802 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine sits in a double-loop steel tube frame. Output is rated at 90 bhp (67 kW / 91 PS), although for this style of motorcycle torque is more important. In that respect, the R 18 doesn’t disappoint – at least 150 Nm (110 lb/ft) is available from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm, with a peak of 158 Nm (116 lb/ft) at 3,000 rpm. Arguably, the six-speed gearbox might have too many ratios.
While electronically-adjustable suspension is absent, the standard specification does include ASC (automatic stability control) and MSR (engine drag torque control). In addition, there’s a choice of three riding modes that are oddly named ‘Rock’, ‘Roll’ and ‘Rain’.
When deliveries begin in September, a First Edition variant is going to be offered featuring Blackstorm Metallic paintwork, contrasting white pinstripes, numerous chrome components and some special badges. The UK starting price is £18,995.
However, R 18 purchasers could be tempted to pay a higher amount, because BMW has also designed a comprehensive range of Original Accessories to enable easy customisation.
