Renault Kiger compact SUV launched in India

As is the case in many markets, the popularity of SUVs continues to grow in India. Indeed, this year they’re expected to account for over a third of sales in the country’s B-segment. The new Renault Kiger is intended to exploit the opportunities created by such ever-increasing demand.

It’s certainly small but tall. Overall length is just 3,991 mm (13’ 1”), which is combined with a height (including roof bars) of 1,750 mm (5’ 9”). Ground clearance meanwhile is 205 mm (8”).

However, there’s enough space inside for five seats, thanks partly to a wheelbase of 2,500 mm (8’ 2”) that pushes the wheels to the vehicle’s four corners. A generous boot capacity of 405 litres – or 879 litres with the split rear bench folded down – is another packaging benefit.

Two 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines are going to be offered. An entry-level naturally-aspirated ‘Energy’ unit delivers 72 PS (71 bhp / 53 kW) plus 96 Nm (70 lb-ft) of peak torque, via either a five-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed ‘Easy-R’ clutchless robotised manual.

The turbocharged alternative raises those output figures to 100 PS (98 bhp / 73 kW) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft). Again, a five-speed manual gearbox is standard, but it can be mated to an ‘X-Tronic’ continuously-variable automatic transmission instead.

Although the Kiger will be available only in India initially, exports to other territories are planned for later on.
