The 2020 Fiat Talento could be short-lived

If the proposed merger between FCA (Fiat’s parent company) and PSA (owner of numerous brands including Peugeot and Vauxhall) is successfully completed, then the just-launched 2020 Talento might not be on sale for very long.

That’s because this medium van is essentially a rebadged version of the Renault Trafic. Basing it on the Peugeot Expert instead is going to be a logical move, as doing so would keep all revenues within the newly-enlarged conglomerate. After all, exactly the same fate recently befell the Vauxhall / Opel Vivaro.

Therefore, the 2020 Talento seems destined to become an interim model.

The latest updates are – unsurprisingly – similar to those announced for the Trafic back in April. In particular, the previous 1.6 litre turbo-diesel engine has been replaced by a 2.0 litre unit. Engineered to comply with Euro 6d-Temp emissions standards, it’s equipped with selective catalytic reduction (so an AdBlue tank is required) and a stop-start device.

Three outputs are being offered:
  • 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS) with 320 Nm (236 lb/ft)
  • 143 bhp (106 kW / 145 PS) with 350 Nm (258 lb/ft)
  • 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) with 380 Nm (280 lb/ft)
Other changes focus mainly on the cab. As well as a refreshed black colour scheme, most variants now come with glossy black trim pieces and every Talento features Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB radio. In addition, the Tecnico and Sportivo grades gain an infotainment system that incorporates a 7” touchscreen, satellite navigation and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility.

UK prices for the 2020 Talento start from £22,695 (excluding VAT).
