2020 Fiat Ducato unveiled

It’s well over a decade old, but judicious updates have managed to keep the current-generation Ducato relevant. Now, to help combat threats posed by relative newcomers such as the latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter, Fiat Professional has announced a few further changes.

For the 2020 model year, the Ducato is being produced with a 2.3 litre MultiJet 2 diesel engine that gains Euro 6d emissions compliance and an improved variable-geometry turbocharger. Four states of tune are available – 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS), 138 bhp (103 kW / 140 PS), 157 bhp (117 kW / 160 PS) or 177 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) – and a six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard.

Alternatively, the options list includes a nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission for the first time. Offered in conjunction with all outputs except the lowest, Eco, Normal and Power settings can be chosen when in ‘Drive’ (fully automatic) mode. If necessary, switching into ‘Autostick’ instead allows hand-operated gear shifting.

Sometime next year, the pure-electric Ducato BEV is due to join the range. Crucial details such as output, range and recharge times have yet to be released, though. What’s more, Fiat initially intends to run a pilot scheme to better assess user requirements, so only selected major customers will be eligible to place orders.

Another key focus was enhancing the suite of driving aids. Consequently, traffic sign recognition, blind spot assist, lane departure warning, emergency brake control and rear cross path detection are among the technologies that can be fitted to a 2020 Ducato.

The exterior styling remains virtually the same as before, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. In fact, piano black headlight surrounds, a mildly revised grille and some different alloy wheel designs comprise the barely noticeable alterations.
