Camaro Convertible ZL1
Chevrolet has announced that its Camaro ZL1 will be available as a convertible from late 2012.
The powertrain will be the same as the coupe’s, which means a 6.2 litre supercharged V8 engine producing a hefty 580 bhp (432 kW / 588 PS) and 754 Nm (556 lb/ft) of torque.
Ensuring all that power is delivered effectively to the road surface are Magnetic Ride Control 3.0, which uses magnetic particles inside the dampers to continually adjust the suspension, and Performance Traction Management, which combines MRC with the car’s traction control, electronic stability control and launch control systems.
Even those sophisticated chassis systems will be somewhat pointless if chopping the Camaro’s roof off leads to excessive body flex. However, Chevrolet reckons that won’t be a problem, thanks to extra reinforcement of the convertible’s bodyshell.
Measures taken include braces for the front and rear of the car, under the transmission tunnel and between the front suspension towers. There’s also additional strengthening incorporated into the sills, front hinge pillars and around the windscreen.
Consequently, it’s claimed that the open-top ZL1 will ‘preserve nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities’ of the coupe version.
Pricing for the 2013 Camaro Convertible ZL1 has yet to be confirmed.
