Chrysler Ypsilon Black&Red
An important element of the Chrysler brand’s relaunch in the UK is the introduction of the Ypsilon supermini. It doesn’t look much like a traditional Chrysler model though, which is unsurprising seeing as it’s essentially a rebadged Lancia.
And that means it has the individual - some would say quirky - styling so typical of recent Lancia products. But at least the design could never be described as bland and, on that basis, the Ypsilon could end up on the shortlists of those who want something more idiosyncratic than the usual Fiesta, Corsa, Polo etc.
Of particular appeal to potential buyers who really want to stand out from the crowd will be the latest addition to the Ypsilon line-up, the Black&Red.
As the name implies, it features striking black and red paintwork which seems to suit the shape of the Chrysler’s five-door body very nicely. The same palette is carried through into the interior, with the seat fabric, door linings and dashboard all being finished in a matching colour scheme.
The Black&Red also comes with a fairly generous standard equipment list that includes Bluetooth, air conditioning, a ‘360-degree’ audio system, dark-tinted glass and 16” multi-spoke alloy wheels.
Prices in the UK start at £12,750, and for that amount power will come from the 68 bhp (51 kW / 69 PS) 8-valve 1.2 litre Fire petrol engine.
An extra £1,200 is needed to buy a Black&Red with the 83 bhp (63 kW / 85 PS) 0.9 litre TwinAir unit which, despite its lower capacity, manages to be both faster and more efficient than the 1.2 litre version.
For diesel fans there’s the 93 bhp (70 kW / 95 PS) 1.3 litre MultiJet option, although it takes the cost up to £14,950. With a combined cycle fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg (3.8 l/100km), it’s more economical than the petrol alternatives and equals the TwinAir’s 99 g/km CO2 emissions figure.
